Project Description
When I joined Gnomon, their website was functional but barely. Built by an outside agency on Ruby on Rails, the site had gone years without meaningful updates. With no in-house web manager or developer, even small changes were outsourced back to the agency… at a steep cost. A single headline tweak could run thousands.
One of the first things I tackled was the workflow. While the CEO wanted to maintain the agency relationship, I proposed a hybrid approach: keep the agency for major updates, but build internal capabilities to handle iterative work in-house. By leveraging our internal design and dev talent for slim coding, UI/UX updates, and ongoing maintenance, we saved Gnomon nearly $80,000 in outsourced fees over the course of a year. More importantly, we reclaimed control enabling faster iterations, A/B testing, and user-informed refinements on our timeline, not theirs.
Within the visual constraints of our existing brand palette, I restructured the homepage to clarify our value proposition. The previous design gave the impression that Gnomon was a VFX studio, not a school. The updated experience made the educational mission clear: a strong logo presence, clearer CTAs, prominent awards, and a reworked narrative flow to guide new visitors with intention.
A full redesign is now in progress, including a comprehensive site audit and updated UX/navigation plan all built on the foundation of a more agile, internally sustainable system.
